The Environmental Systems Research Program is a blend of core and problem-driven research that best utilizes INEEL expertise and key capabilities to support the INEEL and DOE Environmental Quality mission.

The problem-driven research is based on the technology needs and gaps that have been defined by the various Operations and Clean-up programs throughout the DOE complex such as High-Level Waste, Spent Nuclear Fuel, Environmental Restoration, and Waste Management, and validated by the Site Technology Coordination Groups. Core research identifies and develops the tools and capabilities that will be necessary to address the future needs of both the INEEL and DOE Environmental Quality programs.

The program overview discusses the history and goal of the ESR program, and annual reports from fiscal year 1998 to fiscal year 2003 are included. The fiscal year 2002 ESR research portfolio reflects DOE's environmental mission objectives and INEEL's commitment to those objectives through the Subsurface Science and Waste Management Technology Development initiatives.
